The Magic of Perfume
Perfume is a mixture of art and Science; it takes both creativity and knowledge to make wonderful scents. People have been making perfumes since ancient times until this modern age era.
How Perfume works
Perfume is made with science and the art of smell, having a good nose, also called “noses,” which can recognize thousands of smells. This is made with a mixture of natural oil and chemicals to create a new scent.
Over time, scientists have learned how to make use of different chemicals to make and copy smells. This allowed perfumers to creat brand new scents which does not exits in the nature!
Perfume is an Art
There are three basic layers in scent that change over time:
- Top Note: The first smell that you notice will last for 15 to 30 minutes, and these are light and fresh.
- Middle Notes: The heat of the perfume fades after the top notes fade, which gives the perfume its main character.
- Base Notes: This is the deep, long-lasting scent which last for hours and is often rich and warm.
Ingredients in Perfume
Perfumes come in 2 different types: both natural and with lab-made ingredients.
- Natural Ingredients: These are oils from flowers, wood, and resins.
- Synthetic Ingredients: They are man-made scents that are copied or enhance natural smells.
- Aldehydes: They are made from special components that make perfumes feel bright, light, and airy.
- Musk: These are the perfumes that last long; they have a warm and deep scent.
Is Perfume Art or Science?
It differs from person to person as some say it’s an art that only some have and some say it’s all about science, but in fact, it’s both, art and science. Yes, Science helps to create the scent in the perfume, but its also the art of creativity that makes the perfume special by the person who made it.
Perfume is more than just a smell – it’s a feeling, an emotion, a remembrance of special moments or a person, or an expression of one’s personality.
